The main character is a talented musician who dreams of escaping her Ukrainian village to become a concert pianist but is caught up in the Soviet Union's repressive starvation during the Holodomor (Death by Hunger), and Leningrad during the early days of the Nazi siege. A collage of abstract piano keys holds the title text and breaks apart, referencing the chaotic political forces in the novel.
