(W)GBH was founded in 1955 and pioneered much of what we love about public media in the US. Their previous identity was designed in the 70s, when only a few channels were broadcasting content. They needed a fresh identity to face the streaming world. We discovered that the W in WGBH was a vestige of a bygone era, so we eliminated it, making the new logo less horizontal and more functional. From the logo, we extracted a series of croppings to be used as compositional elements across the brand. We also redefined GBH's brand architecture, messaging, color, typography, and image usage.
